When Abby was in the neonatal intensive care, the nurses placed a beautiful hand-made quilted blanket on her isolette. The purpose of the blanket was not for warmth, but a simple yet powerful gesture of love. It meant so much to us that when we heard that the church making the blankets had stopped, we quickly volunteered. We can’t imagine other families with sweet, sick little babies not receiving a blanket, whether it be the remembrance of a time when they overcame all odds, or as a cherished keepsake for the family after the death of their child. You wouldn’t think such a small gesture could make such a big difference and impact, but it does. It did to us.
Our first blanket delivery was late October 2010, the same month Abby died. Since then, we have been honored and blessed, through the generousity of so many others, to gather and provide thousands of keepsake blankets. Tradition has been established that each year we host a Blanket Drive on the weekend of Abby's Birthday.
We continue to jump at the chance to tell the story of God’s amazing power to show us an Abby Blanket coming full circle. . I encourage you to take a few minutes and read it God’s Grace…through the simplicity of a blanket… guaranteed to warm your heart and serve as a tender reminder of the goodness and faithfulness of Christ.
